I need the city; I need to know there are people around me strolling, arguing, fucking—living, and yet I go out very rarely; I stay here in my cage   -Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon by Lucian Freud (1952)
“I remember Francis Bacon would say that he felt he was giving art what he thought it previously lacked. With me, it’s what Yeats called the fascination with what’s difficult. I’m only trying to do what I can’t do.”  - Lucian Freud

Great art is deeply ordered. Even if within the order there may be enormously instinctive and accidental things, nevertheless they come out of a desire for ordering and for returning fact onto the nervous system in a more violent way. (Francis Bacon)

Francis Bacon ”….when you were sitting for a portrait I was trying to do for you, I was always looking at photographs of wild animals.”
David Sylvester ”Yes, I never knew quite how to take that.”
FB ”Well, one image can be deeply suggestive in relation to another.”
”….isn’t that one wants a thing to be as factual as possible and at the same time as deeply suggestive or deeply unlocking of areas of sensation other than simple illustration of the object that you set out to do? Isn’t that what art is about?”
DS ”Are you saying that painting is almost a way of bringing somebody back, that the process of painting is almost like the process of recalling?”
FB ”I am saying it.”
”I’m always surprised when I wake up in the morning.”
