Just as I was finishing Beginners (where Ewan plays a graphic designer doing a record cover for “The Sads”) I ended up doing graphics for some of my favorite musicians. Carrie Brownstein’s my favorite kind of unexpected rock star – kind of shy, well-read, super-articulate and worldly, and then just plain ol’ wild on stage. Mary Timony (from Helium) rocks the strangest combo of new wave and medieval I’ve ever heard. Their new band Wild Flag sounds amazing; here they are doing an great cover of Patti Smith’s Ask The Angels. Wherever Carrie is as she sings this, whatever spell she’s under, I’ve always been a huge admirer of people that can get to that place.
